Work Overview
Catfish have intrigued me since I was a boy, how they always seemed so slow and calm on the bottom of the aquariums in the local goldfish shop, and looked so unusual. They also feature in Dagoman Aboriginal stories of the Northern Territory, and in Japanese culture where it seems they were variously believed to cause or predict earthquakes. In ukiyo-e (wood-block prints) carpenters,
who would be busy after an earthquake, were often depicted as catfish. Of course, there is also the online practice of "catfishing", or using a false identity to pursue a hidden agenda on social media. So for me the catfish represents mystery, secrecy, deceit.
