The work was composed in 1988 whilst the composer was living in Cairns, Australia.
The music is only programmatic in small part and was conceived as a 4 movement smaller symphony or tone poem. The movements are entitled as occurences in a trip to the Great Barrier Reef by sailing boat, the idea of which gave rise to the trajectory of the composition with its mood, emotion, energy and so on.
