Work Overview
'The Angel Called Out - Take On Light' was composed in 2008 for Jabra Latham (saxophone) and Karen Smithies (piano). This Duo may be considered to be structured in three main sections with subsections, and features a variety of distinctive textures, unusual tone colours and extended playing techniques. The work opens with fleeting, pointilistic semiquaver passages played on a piano prepared with glass rods. The effect immediately suggests an other-worldly ambience, befitting for the title of the work. Such passages alternate with more slower-paced melodic interludes played on saxophone. As the piano part becomes more rhythmically regular, chords interlocking with semiquavers, the saxophone plays sustained, accented multiphonics.
