Work Overview

The composer "brief" was to respond, "in any way," to the notion of provenance. The piece abstracts genres/pieces to which composer and PLEXUS performers, respectively, were exposed in their formative years, and which sparked a sense of thrill, joy, captivation - setting the path of a musical life. The meandering structure of the work alludes to the creative process as one's influences ebb and flow, rise and recede, fade and return and combine into newly-hued aggregates, from those early years to the present. It offers a potted meta-perspective for the provenance of Western art-music itself, reaching far back in time with a pastiche of an imagined Plato-esque soundscape. Along the way, there is a gentle, at times humorous, tussle between the genres at various points as they vie for supremacy in their historical moment - and within the musical DNA of the musician in their own historical point.
