Work Overview
The word 'anagnorisis' is of Greek derivation, meaning 'no longer in a state of "unknowledge"'.
It can also mean 'recognition' or the dénouement in a drama'.
The piece was written at a time when my life circumstances had changed suddenly, and not happily, during 2001, and when my 'knowledge-base' certainly had to shift accordingly. This time coincided with the events of 11 Sept 2001, which gave the work a more externalised frame of reference, as the Western world was forced to renegotiate many aspects of modern existence, hitherto taken for granted, and where we 'recognised' the precariousness of living under the threat of terrorism.
I have also arranged the work for string orchestra with piano solo, in honour of Australian composer, Brenton Broadstock, to mark his 50th birthday; this was an initiative of Kevin Purcell, which also includes works by himself, Brenton Broadstock, Stuart Greenbaum, Johanna Selleck, Peter Sullivan, Andrian Pertout, and Katy Abbott. The collection was recorded by the MSO strings in April, 2003, with the composer as soloist.
I have also arranged the work for solo piano and for duo piano.
