Work Overview
After Fra Angelico's painting in the Museo de San Marco, a setting of the poem by Diane Fahey from her Voices from the Honeycomb (Qld: Jacaranda P, 1986). Used with kind permission of the poet. She writes: "The fame of Fra Angelico (c. 1400 - 1455) rests largely on the superb frescoes he painted in the cloister cells of the Dominican Monastery of San marco (143847). Girolamo Savonarola (14521498), Dominican friar and reformer, was sent to San Marco in 1482. He attained great power in Florence but when the people of that city turned against him, he was hanged by the authorities, his body burned and the ashes thrown into the Arno. Sandro Botticelli (1455-1510) was influenced by Savonarola's apocalyptic theology; this is thought to have affected his later work, particularly in its deeply saturated colour schemes."
