Work

Promise : SATB a capella

by Becky Llewellyn (2019)

Work Overview

Music has power. Words have power. In this musical work, Becky has set the actual words of the British Parliament which on the 19th of February 1836, passed an Act establishing South Australia, called the Letters Patent. The text are the actual words, a contract if you like, which promises that nothing in this Letters Patent shall affect the rights of any Aborigiinal Natives or their descendants. Becky sets the music for the British imperial court always ascending and the fate of the indigenous always descending until they cross together at the end, a co-mingled broken promise set up on the 19th of February 1836. It asks the listener to think about this promise and what happened in reality after the righteous glow of the intent.
