Work Overview
Each fugue demonstrates a different facet of keyboard playing and fugue technique. #1 is centred around broken chords, and contains some augmentation; #2 focuses on canon; #3 incorporates jazzy rhythms and is unusual for beginning with stretto; #4 is based on the notes BACH; #5 is a gigue-like romp; #6 takes just three pitches for its subject and is entirely written in treble clef; the theme of #7 is heard both forwards and backwards and even both at the same time. These fugues are prelude-less, as the resulting tonal ambiguity at the outset of each is part of their charm. They may be played, with the exception of the first, on either piano or harpsichord.
