6 Memos was inspired by a collection of lectures that Italo Calvino was invited to deliver at Harvard University as part of the Charles Eliot Norton Lectures. Calvino devotes one lecture - or memo - to each of the following indispensable qualities for literature in the coming millennium (2000's): lightness, quickness, exactitude, visibility, multiplicity and consistency.
Instrumentation: Flute (also alto flute and piccolo), 2 violins, viola, cello.
Duration: 20 min.
Contents note: I. Lightness -- II. Velocity -- III. Exactness -- IV. Visibility -- V. Multiplicity -- VI. Consistency.
Commission note: Commissioned by Saarbrucker Kammermusiktage.. Commissioned by the Mandelring Quartet and Saarbrucker Kammermusiktage (Saarbrücken Rundfunk)
6 memos is based on "Six Memos for the Next Millenium" by Italo Calvino. The movements correspond to the chapters of the book.
