Work Overview

Brian and Bansky is an art music film with a live and electroacoustic soundtrack performed by the Delta Saxophone Quartet, a distinguished UK based quartet. The work presents a fantasy narrative in a contemporary electro-acoustic-audio-visual format about a Budgerigar, Brian and a dog, Bansky.

This work is eclectic and brings together interactive extended instrumental ensemble techniques, improvisation, audiovisual projection and performance art in the form of two interlocking components: A video projection piece with an electro-acoustic soundtrack - A score performed with the video projection by the saxophone quartet

The work is inspired by the word Budgerigar, of Aboriginal origin, an alteration of gijirrigaa from the Gamilaroi Murri people from the area around Singleton in the Hunter Valley to the Warrumbungle Mountains. Starting with the sound of this word voiced, the work explores ideas about place of origin, confinement, migration and models and metaphors of freedom.

The setting is a dialogue between Brian, the Budgerigar and Banksy, the crossbred King Charles Spaniel/ Poodle (Spoodle). The voices of the bird and the dog sing in a dreamscape world supported, interrogated and realized by the live instrumental quartet. The performance, designed to be a virtuosic instrumental piece, is not an underscore to the visual but forms a symbiotic relationship within a Visual Music setting where moving image is both narrative and score.
