Work Overview
Many Turnings is in two movements, preferably to be played in one performance.
The title refers to both the process of pitch generation and, particularly in the first movement, to the sudden turn that the music takes, with virtuosic passages being followed by calm colourfully concentrated areas. In this movement also the listener will hear the initial motoric passages being "tripped" up. This idea is extended later in the piece, where uneven rhythms are developed.
In the second movement each player's turning occurs independently within broken-chord cells. These form growing and diminishing complexes departing from and arriving at a central pitch.
