Work Overview
This work is dedicated to the memory of my Mother Iris Spence who fought a brave battle with cancer in 1992. I started composing the work during her illness and completed it after she died. The work is programmatic in that it tells her story. The third movement in particular recalls the moment of goodbye with the flutes mimicing the wave form and sound of a heart machine until the moment they become still. The final movement consists of a series of variations on a melody called Hollingside. My experience of this tune was cathartic at the time.
