Work Overview
At-Taubah (Arabic for "The Repentance") drew its initial poetic impetus from my understanding of the concept of repentance, as espoused in Islam, Christianity and various other spiritual traditions. As a musical "meditation", its symbolic dimension encompasses myriad references to the spiritual practice of as-samā, or the mystical audtion of music. In the Arabic language the verb samā signifies to hear or to listen. Fundamentally, as-samā was originally limited to listening to the divine call, as manifested in the psalmody of the Qur'ān. However, its meaning was subsequently expanded to include the audition and practice of music. In Sufism (the mystical stream of Islam) samā refers to the mystical concert, in which listening takes on a ritualised form and invokes a state of ecstasy.
