Work Overview

These notes are extracted from a letter from Dindy to clarinetist Craig Hill and were first published as the liner notes to the CD recording of the work, released independently in 2025.

Movement 1: The eagle in the old days (the aboriginal Creator Spirit Bunjil) used to fly the length of the valley, swooping down from a high hill slightly south of my place. With white settlement the eagles were drive out: the movement begins with the eagles, but the second section (after the repeat) is only the memory of them.

Movement 2: A sacred, very quiet place in the valley where spirit of the earth nurtures life, biding its time. This is in walking distance of my place, and is strong and peaceful.

Movement 3: The local residents gather and begin to assert energy which eventually leads to the saving of the creek and the valley from the freeway. The valley is now free and open to all - Antonio Park (Schwerkolt Cottage) to Nunawading, and beyond.

Movement 4: The Mullum Mullum Festival now is largely presented by indigenous people, who came together from surround areas to speak and perform (Yarran Dheran).
