Work Overview

One of the few pieces in the art-song repertoire about surfing! In the Music Theatre piece from which it comes (The Beach Project), this piece presages the arrival of a fabled wave on which a stranded Russian ballet dancer is to use his ballet skills riding a surfboard to win a surf competition! In the theatrical staging, the song is meant to segue into a 'tribal' ritual invoking a grand surfing spirit (Invocation of the Great Spirit).
