AMC Associated Artist Connor D'Netto has been announced as the recipient of the 2022 Albert H. Maggs Composition Award for his opera, The Call (2022).
The Award is provided as a commission, valued at $15,000, for the creation of a new musical work of serious nature.
The Award judging panel commented:
"Queensland composer Connor D'Netto is the winner of the 2022 Albert H Maggs Award for his opera The Call. This one-hander sustains its compelling dramatic arc across an hour. The solo female vocal writing is varied, communicative and emotionally convincing. The scoring blends orchestral strings with electric guitars and percussion in a thoroughly contemporary and inventive manner; all supporting the distinctive psychological atmosphere very effectively. It's warm and wild in equal measure. A great contribution to the genre. We congratulate Connor on this fine achievement and look forward to the new work that he will subsequently write in fulfilment of the Maggs Award."
The Call was inspired by an original story told by Auburn Sheaffer, with libretto written by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall.
Commissioned by Opera Queensland, it premiered in September 2022 at the Brisbane Festival, in the Concert Hall QPAC, sung by Ali McGregor with the Queensland Symphony, conducted by Zoe Zeniodi.
