Australian music on ABC Classic FM in January 2014
[Article updated 20 December: Buzacott's 'Strangers in Paradise' series (6-9 Jan); Alfred Hill - Joy of Life, program 2 (14 Jan)]
This month we're looking both forward and back. Back to the year (or two) that was with a series of repeat broadcasts of ABC Classic FM-presented concerts: The Best of Sunday Live includes music by Stephen Lalor, Jeremy Rose and Eric Gross; and New Music Up Late revisits live event specials featuring the music of Felix Werder, Mike Majkowski, Timothy Constable, Austin Buckett, Cat Hope, Kate Moore, James Humberstone, Julian Day, Evan Mannell, and Robin Fox and Eugene Ughetti.
Back to our classical heritage in programs on the life and music of Alfred Hill (1869-1960). And to the role of the ABC in the concert life of regional Australia in the feature series Strangers in Paradise (both presented by Martin Buzacott). And courtesy of performances at the 2013 Bangalow Festival, to more recent Australian classics by Ross Edwards, Andrew Schultz and Matthew Hindson, as well as Brett Dean's Carlo from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, and Carl Vine's Flute Sonata from the Elder Conservatorium.
Forward to the next generation of classical musicians in a series of concerts by the Australian Youth Orchestra. The concerts include world premieres from two very young emerging composers, Andrew Howes and Philip Jameson, as well as a look back to the Sculthorpe classic, Earth Cry. Forward with a live broadcast from cutting edge international improvising trio MURAL (featuring Australian veteran wind player Jim Denley) on New Music Up Late. And with half an eye on the future, new performances of recent works by Paul Stanhope (Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra) and Elena Kats-Chernin (Australia Quartet) that may well be classics in the making.
If you're looking for some more Australian music listening online, check out the summer season of New Waves podcasts featuring large-scale immersive works from Chamber Made Opera, Andrew Ford, Clocks and Clouds, Oren Ambarchi, Greg Schiemer, and Speak Percussion. Or explore the back catalogue with Rewind. The collection is growing all the time, with latest additions of music by Alfred Hill, Warren Abeshouse, and a new version of Ross Edwards's late 1970s classic Ecstatic Dances for flute and clarinet.
Happy summer listening.
