Inspired by the poetry of W. H. Auden (Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia), this is music in praise of music – a program of pure ‘heartland’ ACS repertoire, not only in the beauty of music itself but in the way the works reflect and inform each other. The central pairing of Britten’s Hymn and Stanhope’s Lament view St. Cecilia – music’s patron saint – from quite different angles. This is indeed music born of vision, love and devotion.
