Event Details

NEW ELECTRONIC AND MULTIMEDIA TERRITORIES FOR STRINGS Presenting 20th and 21st century string compositions, Metapraxis is a rare and unexpected array of new-music talent led by iconic composer, violinist and innovator Jon Rose; directed by the adventurous local string quartet Atticus (Lizzy Welsh, Zac Johnston, Phoebe Green and Judith Hamann) with an eclectic range of special guest artists. String composition is one of western music’s most established and versatile forms – Metapraxis uses familiar instruments combined with fresh and imaginative sound elements in order to approach the form in a way that is vibrantly new. The programming concepts of Metapraxis are inspired by the ideology of Greek composer Jani Christou, who described a ‘metapraxis’ as an action that goes against the implied logic of an art form – a destabilisation, an implosive gesture and a push against the norms. Metapraxis culminates in two Australian premiere works for large forces, including the rarely performed 1966 masterpiece Praxis for 12 by Jani Christou and a new work Strings and Fences 2 by Jon Rose, the recent recipient of the Don Banks Award in recognition of his life long contribution to the musical fabric of Australia. Strings and Fences 2 is the second realisation of the iconic bowed fences project for amplified string octet and video. Metapraxis also features improvised works by special support acts, using electronics and multimedia to explore new territories in string based music. Support acts 19 July: James Rushford/Joe Talia; 20 July: Jon Rose, Palimpolin; 21 July: Anita Hustas/Andrea Keeble

Featured non-Australian music: Jani Christou
