Paul Stanhope’s ironic and cynical Machinations pillories contemporary politics. Stanhope’s language is lyrical, witty and commanding. Glass’ enigmatic Symphony is styled as three intriguing movements. Beginning with eight themes contrapuntally developed, the first movement is the longest, the second essays a set of variations and the third is an abrupt surprise. This program also presents the Wild Swans Suite. Who better to conduct these contemporary narratives of Kats-Chernin’s Wild Swans Suite than the authoritative Benjamin Northey.
Featured non-Australian music: Glass
