Event Details

All and sundry are invited to attend Samuel Pender-Bayne's Graduation Recital, presenting original compositions written for a Bachelor of Music (Composition) with Honours from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. There are two original compositions which will be premiered at this concert. The first is a 15-minute work for chamber choir and piano, called Sea. The second is a 30-minute song cycle for soprano, baritone and 10 instrumentalists (flute, clarinet, bassoon, trombone, percussion, piano, guitar, violin, cello, double bass), called Telling the Truth. Sea is a calm, meditative and peaceful work, employing triadic tonality and classical ideas of musical beauty. The text (written by the composer) is minimal, focussing on repetition of emotive words to submit the listener into a reflective and still mind. Sea is conducted by Eavan Dowse, with Amy Putt on piano, and featuring vocal students from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Telling the Truth is a turbulent, shocking and sometimes extreme work based on the marriage of poets Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes, and setting text by these great literary figures. Six of their great poems form a dialogue of love, hate, anger, despair, affection, and the full spectrum of human emotion. Telling the Truth is conducted by Roland Peelman, featuring Jenny Liu (soprano), Alex Knight (baritone), and ten very bright and talented instrumentalists from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
