Event Details
Richard Mills has long been a major force in Australian music and this joint premiere of the co-commissioned Passion for the Tasmanian, West Australia Symphony Orchestras and The Queensland Orchestra is a major event. His compositions extend from full-length operas and ballets to a rejuvenation of the ABC’s iconic news theme. The Passion According to St Mark is a dramatic new direction for Mills, one in which few modern composers have ventured. Although modelled on the antiphonal choirs from St Marks in Venice, Mills’ Passion has more in common with Bach’s choral masterpieces, blending operatic drama with soulful contemplation, this music is attuned to the external world of contemporary problems, and ambiguities which beset many yet conveys an ultimate and timeless message – of the sublime and unfathomable incarnation, death and resurrection of Christ.
