Event Details
New songs soaked in the colours and textures of the Australian sky. When Europeans first came to Australia, they were struck by the intensity of the sky’s blue. It took the settlers several generations to come to terms with the vibrant new hues in their paintings. Like art, music is affected by landscape.
In this concert, the Australian sky is ever-present in the colours and textures of sound, created in a collaboration between Topology and Australia’s leading choir – the Australian Voices, led by Gordon Hamilton. No vocalists have gone further in the exploration of the Australian landscape in music. Topology’s hard-hitting rhythmic edge and extraction of hidden worlds of instrumental sound colours is stunningly complemented by the Australian Voices’ finely-tuned awareness of vocal texture and timbre. The experience is best described as being enveloped in a gallery of sound pictures, intensifying emotional and experiential responses to the sky.
This is music of airiness and transcendence, reflecting on the transplanted experience of settler Australians. The artists mix their own reflections with poems by Bronwyn Lea, David Malouf and other writers delighted with skygazing.
