Product details

The text by Gary Brodziak is an epitaph for a friend of his who died at a young age, having been ill for most of his life.

Although quite short, this song has particular significance for the composer, not only due to the way the pitches are organized, but also because of the appropriateness of that organization to the text. Despite the somewhat exceptional nature of the pitch organization within Reeder's oeuvre, other characteristics of the composer's recent style are present.

The song progresses from simple triadic harmony to more dissonant all-interval tetrachordal harmony. Perhaps this reflects how Brett's life was overcome by his illness and how he felt as death loomed. Throughout, the singer's pitches are predominantly those of the harmonies played on the piano. The composer has recreated the natural rhythm of the spoken text.
