Title theme from the film Age of Consent (1968).
The Little Serenade is a song of innocence. It was originally the main theme of the film Age of Consent, directed by Michael Powell in 1968. Shortly before the New York premiere of the film, some parts of the sound track recording were found to be flawed. It was decided that my complete score should be re-recorded. At the time, however, I was living in a Zen Buddhist monastery in Japan, and, unaware of the problem, the many requests for the music went unanswered. Finally, a new score was written at very short notice by an English composer. In 1977, upon a request for an encore piece from the Austral Quartet, I made the present arrangement of the theme. Meantime, it pleases me that, with the re-evaluation of Michael Powell’s work, my original sound track may now be restored to the film. Peter Sculthorpe
