Meditation on nine : for piano / Michael Hannan.
by Michael Hannan (2014)
Meditation on Nine is a work based on the number nine. There is an underlying static texture in three layers, each of three notes. Within each layer the durations of all the notes are the same, but between each layer they are different. Thus the notes of each layer phase with each other, their attacks rarely coinciding. The nine different notes found in the three layers combine to form a mysterious chord typical of the harmonic language I developed during the 1980s and 1990s with my Resonances series. Superimposed on this slowly changing chordal texture are two sporadically-occurring loud chordal gestures each containing nine different notes. These gestures were inspired by birdcalls heard during the otherwise peaceful sonic ambience of dawn. As with many of my works for piano, the sustaining pedal is depressed from beginning to end to create a resonant cloud.
