Product details
This piece is a stand-alone arrangement of the fourth of five movements of a larger work, based on and named for Francis Thompson's The Hound of Heaven. The larger work was commissioned by Matthew Kneale for bassoon and strings (two violins, viola, cello and double bass). The present piece is arranged for bassoon and piano.
Thompson's poem has long held a fascination for me. In spite of its archaic language, the vivid imagery is captivating, along with the redemptive, semi-autobiographical story arch. It was first suggested to me by my high school English teacher (thanks, Mrs Meisner!) and has become a life long companion that I appreciate more as life goes on.
The fourth stanza of the poem (which corresponds to this fourth movement) is the nadir of the redemption story. Having fled God (the 'hound' of the title) and sought fleeting solace in various places, the protagonist ends up alone lamenting his life's futility and questioning God's part in it. The tender restoration of the fifth section remains in the future and does not yet enlighten this fourth movement which ends in mournful lament. Sometimes in order to have a strong hope of redemption we need to understand the depths of despair.
