Therein Lies is a sonic documentation of the emotions and thoughts I felt while staring at the horizon while on a coastal walk with a friend. The piece is inspired by the theory of the sublime, put forward by Edmund Burke to which he described as "the strongest emotion that the mind is capable of feeling." Melodic lines crawl onto the scene and intertwine with each other; then they leave the scene with a different sentiment, changed, evolved. I came to realise that we are all interconnected, and everything affects everything else.
This is illustrated in the guitar, where embers of a previous motivic idea blossoms into something entirely new in the subsequent section. Interweaving gestures of frustration in the piano slowly transform into blissful simplicity in the last section of the piece. In that moment, all the worries in life seem insignificant and one can only surrender and leave their fears in the hands of the universe.
