Work Overview

Portrait of Blood is a work for mezzo-soprano and string quartet, with text of the same title by Melbourne poet Peter Bakowski. Peter's poetry is understated and direct yet incredibly colourful; in this poem he describes blood and all it's dramatic connotations, literal and colloquial, in the 2nd person to illuminate the dependent relationship we have to it. The setting conveys the drama of the text whilst maintaining the duality of a resting pulse with the vitality of moving blood.
