Work Overview
This orchestral song uses the Calabrese language, spoken in the
Calabrian Province at the southwest end of the Italian Peninsula.
Calabrese is often called a dialect, but it is a language in its
own right, similar to Sicilian. The text is from a poem 'U Paisi'
by an unknown author. "U paisi" is Calabrese for "the country" or
"the village". In Italian, it would be "il paese". The term can
refer to a small town or community, often like so much of
Calabria, rural or agricultural. In Calabria, many towns and
villages are nestled in the hills or mountains, with beautiful
scenery and a strong sense of community.
Duormi tranquillu a luna t'addormenta,
u suli ti rivìghja appena nèscia.
Nu mundu carmu quarcosa,
a strata chi t'aspetta;
muntagni ti salutanu I luntanu;
ti chiama u mari
e l'àrburu ti 'mbita i frutti mu ti mangi all'umbra sua.
Si nièsci, 'ncuntri amici a tutti i parti e cuògghji stritti i mani a nòfiniri.
Sleep tranquilly,
The moon will put you to sleep
The sun will wake you as soon as it rises.
The world is at at peace
and the road awaits you;
The mountains salute you from afar;

eat their fruit in their shade.
