Ten simple melodies : for the young pianist / Justin Michael McKay.
Library shelf no. 786.2088054/MCK 1 [Not for loan]
Work Overview
Ten Simple Melodies was written in 2014. The pieces cover a range of moods, styles and pianistic effects, but each is of a melodic nature. Techniques explored include finger changing on repeated notes (Finger Dancing Song), the use of the sostenuto pedal (Echo Point), articulation (Invention), overlapping notes (Legatissimo), among others. This set is meant to complement Thirty Little Canons for the young pianist, with a mix of polyphony and homophony. A variety of keys is represented, with emphasis on five-finger patterns using several black keys (particularly numbers VI-IX). Suggestions for fingering and phrasing have been added, to make the pieces readily playable. These pieces are roughly of around second grade level of difficulty, but may also be found enjoyable sight-reading for more experienced pianists.
