Work Overview
Prelude V "I Can't Breathe", Part Two is a musical reflection on the Black Summer bushfires of 2019/2020.
The work draws on an improvisatory style. It opens with a rhapsodic re-imagining of the chorale harmonies from Prelude IV. The morse code 'D' messages of Prelude IV are freely re-interpreted as bells, softly tolling from afar. A dirge-like canon (based on the head of Mozart's First Subject from the D Major Piano Sonata K.576) rumbles in the bass register, agitatedly rising. It erupts into lush but pained rolled chords, which fragment into slow moving, shape-shifting, pulsed sounds. The bells toll once more, before all sound is finally extinguished.
