A musical love-letter to Spain, the piece uses 4 female voices embedded in the orchestra, who sing the texts of flamenco songs. The work opens and closes with a "dreamscape" recalling fragments of well-known Spanish or Spanish-flavoured pieces. Various Spanish music styles appear in the piece: solea, bulerias, jota, saeta etc. Clapping and stamping from singers and percussionists also feature, as the work is based around the "jaleo", the non-singing non-guitar playing performers in flamenco.
Instrumentation: 4 female voices, piccolo (doubling flute), 2 flutes, 2 oboes, cor anglais in F, 2 clarinets in B flat, bass clarinet in B flat (doubling clarinet), 2 bassoons, 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets in C, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion (glockenspiel, xylophone, chimes, side drum, tenor drum, bass drum, bongos, tambourine, castanets, whip, finger cymbals, tamtam; suspended sizzle and chinese cymbals), harp, strings.
Duration: 16 min.
