Song of the Currawong : baritone or mezzo-soprano voice with piano / music and lyrics: Margaret Brandman.
Library shelf no. 783.67542/BRA 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
Song of the Currawong as the name suggests is an art song referencing Australian native wildlife and birdsong. It is the first song in the composer's set of Australian songs titled 'From the Mountains to the Sea'.
The work is through-composed. The introductory adagio section in 5/4 time establishes a reflective mood, while the second section moves along somewhat as it settles into the 4/4 time signature. The contrasting third and fourth sections feature a rich chromatic harmony which help to establish the mood of both the moonlight and coming dawn.
