Work Overview

In June 2018, my close friend Laco passed away. We were childhood friends - having both once been athletes who had ended up on the Czechoslovakian national team, living in the same dormitory for many years. Sadly, his very successful career as a long-distance runner ended abruptly in his early 20s, when a car accident left him paraplegic. The car he had been driving had been the first prize from an international running competition in

France. Despite his ordeal, Laco never stopped being a fighter and a joker. Even when in unbearable pain, he was always the life of the party, and he never stopped being a gentleman. He would often make light of his difficult

situation. His comic impersonations were the stuff of legend. This piece is a tribute to Laco's great spirit.

The piece has 5 strings retuned to create rich sonorities. The first two movements are slow and reflective (approx.AMEB 7-8), the last one is shorter and fast (advanced level).

The composer notes the following styles, genres, subjects etc associated with this work:
The first movement has classical and romantic era influences - a bit of Mozart mixed with Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. The second movement has rich chords with interesting and unexpected modulations. The third movement is very fast and does not stop 'pumping' until the very last few bars, when the tempo relaxes. The movement is very energetic with driving rhythms.
