Work Overview
This piece for big band draws on many musical influences. The idea for the piece was first conceived when the composer was travelling through the mountains of Greece, looking at a scenery comprised of many orange and olive trees, while listening to the music of big band composer and trumpeter Don Ellis who was prominent in the 1960s and '70s. While incorporating the joyful exubrance of Ellis's work and his fasicination with unusal time signatures, stylistic influences can be heard from big band jazz, Bulgarian and Greek rhythms and Calypso; and it has also been described as reminicent of Irish music.
The work is in an odd time signature, with a groove of 13/8-11/8. It also moves into 10/8 on three ocassions.
It features two improvised solos, on trumpet and on either soprano sax or alto sax.
