Work Overview

砕けても、砕けてもあり、水の月

broken and broken again the moon in water

kudaketemo, kudaketemo ari, mizu no tsuki

This evocative haiku was written by Ueda Chōshū 上田聴秋 (1852-1932) who joined the fight to end the Tokugawa rule, a time of turmoil when Japan was broken, and broken again. After the Meiji Restoration, Chōshū took up poetry and published a magazine promoting haiku.

The moon reflected in water evokes Zen metaphors for enlightenment, seeing the bigger picture... a liberation from the delusion of the separateness of Self from the greater One. That may well be, but rather than repeated clichés, I'd rather the listener find their own interpretation to the lyrics and what it means to be broken and broken again, and like the moon in water, still remain.

If you perform or record this piece, please let me know. I'd love to hear about it. I'm always happy to receive questions about the score. If you need it transposed to a different key in order to read at pitch, let me know. Make it your own. Play with the dynamics, the timbres, the tempo...
