Work Overview

The work exhibits a sense of being 'on the outer' by using unconventional one-stick, finger and bouncing techniques on a drumhead not attached to a shell. Departures from orthodox techniques include intricately pressing fingers onto the drumhead for degrees of dampened sounds, and using different parts of the beaters on the rim as well as the head. Finger and fingernail sounds extend the range of playing possibilities and rhythmic variations, including thumb rolls and one-handed tremolos played against other rhythmic phrases.
