There is a program note in the score; it ends with the phrase 'the listener is presented with a confrontation between non-developing and developing structures'. The work is quite sectional, and probably displays the influence or techniques of such composers as Birtwistle, Lutoslawski and Schoenberg.
Instrumentation: 2 oboes (2nd doubling cor anglais), 2 clarinets (2nd doubling bass clarinet), 2 horns, 2 bassoons.
