Work Overview
Summer Pieces for strings was written in 1982 and is based on an earlier work of the same name for organ. The first performance of the work was given in 1983 by Australian Chamber Orchestra conducted by Carl Vine. Summer Pieces for strings was subsequently revised and a new edition prepared in November 2016.
The two movements of the work have contrasting charcaters: the first is hazy, slow and dreamlike; whilst the second is full of teeming, insect-like energy and rhythmic drive. The two movements are of roughly the same duration - about 4 minutes 30 seconds each.
