Work Overview

This work was written in 1946, when I was a student at the University of Melbourne modal and somewhat pastoral in character. Looking back, I suspect that the chromatic
nature of this work was dictated by my desire to reflect the life of the dedicatee. George and his family escaped the Holocaust, arriving in Australia in 1939. Through
them, I became acquainted with a world that was far from the comfortable place then known to me.

The present score is a revision of the original. I made the revisions for Wendy Cooper, for first performance at the International Double Reed Society Conference,
Morgantown, University of West Virginia, U.S.A., on 8 August, 2001.
