Work Overview

The work is written to the memory of Princess Marie-Christiane Lichnowky (1765-1841), wife of Prince Karl Lichnowski who were Beethoven's most influential patrons, introduced to him by Count Waldstein of Bonn who was a committed Freemason. The Princess was highly intelligent an accomplished musician and shared with the composer a deep interest in the rationalist philosophies of the 18th century Enlightenment. The work's "program" is that there existed an attachment between the Princess and Beethoven that had to be kept secret for reasons of social propriety. None of Beethoven's love affairs proved lasting, but the attachment between Princess and composer did prove to be so. The Quintet is written to the 4-movement model of classical music, and is described as "a study in co-existing and equal opposites". It draws equally on the structures of classical music and the melodic character of modern dance and popular music. Thus the 1st Movement in sonata form aims to depict "Profane Love/Romantic Love" in its 1st & 2nd subjects, the 2nd slow movement "Constancy/Deceit", the 3rd Movement's Scherzo & Trio "Flirtation/Isolation", and the 4th Movement, "Fusion of Opposites", is a Rondo where 2 themes merge contrapuntally at the close leading to a lively Coda.
