Work Overview

Ballando con la Vita (Italian for "Dancing with Life"), for trombone and violin, was commissioned by Ben Baldanza, the Chief Executive Officer of Spirit Airways, USA and a highly accomplished trombonist. It was composed especially for performance by himself and his son, Enzo Baldanza, a gifted violin student. Ballando Con La Vita is intended to be a musical portrayal of the emotional and spiritual states associated with the first years of Enzo's life. As such, it is divided into three movements, each with a symbolic title lending itself to multiple interpretations and encompassing symbolic references to these interpretations.

The first movement, "La Chiamata all'Alba" which translates to "The Call at Dawn", comprises music inspired by ancient, ceremonial music of Rome and the Near East. I also drew particular poetic impetus from the ancient ritualistic dances which were wont to be performed with the rising of the sun. The second movement, "Preghiera all'Amore", the English equivalent of which is "Prayer to Love", uses the Chinese and Arab inspired musical material from my viola composition Prayer, in the melodic line of the trombone, punctuated by pizzicato chords on the violin. The title of the third movement, "Marcia delle Fiabe" emanated from my predilection for word play. "Marcia delle Fiabe" can be translated as "March of the Fairy Tales" or "Procession of the Fairy Tales" which refers to a procession of characters from fairy tales-a popular Italian children's event. However, since Ben Baldanza's wife's name happens to be "Marcia", the title can also be translated as "Marcia of the Fairy tales"-a celebration of the real life fairy tale which led to the birth of Enzo and the subsequent evolution of Marcia's love for her young son.
