Brisbane-based composer Rachel Merton began studying composition from 12 years of age at the Young Conservatorium of Music. Merton studied with Stephen Leek for five years, right through to her Bachelor of Music in Composition with Dr Stephen Cronin, which she received in 2005 at the Queensland Conservatorium. In 2012 Merton returned to studies after a substantial break to complete a Master of Music Studies in composition in 2013. During that time her achievements included placings and first prize in the ASME Young Composers Competition 1997-2001, the A.G. Francis Composition Prize in 2002, and first place in the Advanced Section of Composition for the Keys Festival for Australian Music (2006). Most recently Merton received the Fine Music FM Young Composers Award 2013 for her work And the World was Finally Right for symphony orchestra and chorale.
Rachel Merton's works have been aired on 4MBS, ABC Classic FM, and Bay FM; they have also been performed in Brisbane, Adelaide and Sydney including ensembles such as The Song Company (MODArt 2003), the Firm Concert series (2000) and the Zephyr Quartet (2000). Merton currently teaches piano and composition at Sheldon College and at her home music studio and recently became the QLD coordinator for the ASME Young Composers Competition.
Merton is a strong advocate of music for the community. In 2012 Merton established her own ensemble Ekstasis to workshop and performs new works. Made from musicians from her local area Ekstasis presents regular concerts to the community. Other community involvement includes participating in commissions from local orchestras and schools along with arrangements for various local events. Merton's compositions aim to be accessible to a wide audience and aim for emotional connections with each listener.
