Event Details

This program traverses the Australian musical landscape on the back of the viola. Many composers have used the viola to express their most intimate, personal reflections, often at the very end of their life.  These eight works show both the rich diversity of the viola's expressiveness and the astonishing breadth of Australia's compositional voices.

Australia Piano Quartet's James Wannan is joined by USA based, Sydney violinist Alexandra Osborne in Matthew Hindson's rock inspired duo, Chrissietina's Magic Fantasy and a new arrangement of Mary Finsterer's Ignis for viola d'amore and violin.

The recital spans 100 years of Australian music.  Starting with Percy Grainger's Arrival Platform Humlet, an eccentric piece that one would 'hum' to oneself, on the way to meeting a romantic interest at the train station.

The cadenza by Peggy Glanville-Hicks is a dramatic display of viola virtuosity.  The program moves onto Brett Dean and Liza Lim's solo works for viola.  These pieces expand the tonal and expressive possibilities of the instrument.  The spirit of the Australian landscape is conjured by Enyato II by Ross Edwards and Anne Boyd's extroadinary new work for viola d'amore captures a fantastical world of meditative beauty.
