Product details

The first movement of this Suite, Beneath the Yellow Moon, was commissioned to celebrate Alice Moyle's 96th birthday by Carolyn and Peter Lowry. It was a request that the piece of music feature the two instruments which Alice studied for her first degree in music, at the Melbourne Conservatorium - the piano and cello.
The commission was awarded to Ann Carr-Boyd who was a student of Alice Moyle's when she taught Ethnomusicology at the University of Sydney.
Alice's field of specialty was aboriginal music and Ann's treatment of the cello evokes, in part, the didjeridu. The title of the piece is inspired by a poem written in 1941 by Alice's late husband John Moyle, "Nocturne" (1941) (excerpt)
I walked with you beneath the moon, the yellow moon.
Still, leaf-still, night drank the dew falling.
Magic. Can you hear it? Something calling
' Soon, Soon.'
On January 2nd 2005, Megan Corlette and Ann Carr-Boyd played this movement for Alice at her home in Sydney. Dr Alice Moyle died in April 2005 and part of the work, recorded by Katherine Barnett and the composer, was played at her funeral.
The Suite with three movements reflect two important elements in the life of Dr Alice Moyle - her family life and marriage to John Moyle (whose poems have influenced me in writing this work), and her invaluable work in collecting recordings of aboriginal music from northern Australia. Hence the titles of the three movements, the first being from one of John Moyle's poems and the other titles belonging very much to Australia. The music itself reflects the dual influences of music and life in mid-twentieth century Sydney, and on the other hand, the vast country beyond and the music of its original inhabitants.
