Product details
The clarinet is a remarkable instrument in at least two ways: it is capable of great agility and can play virtuosic passages at virtually any speed, a quality I was to exploit ten years later with a pair of solo pieces, Whirligig and Gorlywhorl. In this work, however, I set out to explore the clarinet's ability to sing long, melodic lines and phrases with supremely smooth legato. The piano accompanies these with note groups, interjections and vigorous cluster outbursts.
The work is written in both traditional and graphic notation (i.e. without bar lines). Traditional values are played relative to crotchet = 60; when note heads are not joined and have no stems, their durations are indicated by the spatial equation of 1cm = approx. 1 second.
