A song cycle on poems of A E Housman (The True Lover), Harold Monro (Go Now Beloved) and Thomas Hardy (A Gentleman's Epitaph), for bass voice and orchestra. A contemporary addition to the genre of English art song, but sitting in subject matter alongside Mussorgsky's Songs and Dances of Death.
