I approached the composition within the original definition of 'concerto', ie. composing for the orchestra to make a concerted effort to entertain the audience. When variations on a traditional Australian tune were suggested I thought of The Drover's Song. The tune seems to encapsulate an optimistic, care-free approach to life in 19th century country Australia.
Instrumentation: Piccolo, 2 flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in Bb, 2 bassoons, 4 horns in F, 2 trumpets in Bb, 2 trombones, timpani, percussion (1 player), strings.
Duration: 15 min.
