Work Overview

The title Catena refers to the form of this work that consists of a closely connected series of segments, often linked together by transitory passages. Characteristic of each segment is a specific musical idea which is repeated many times within that particular section. Repetitions are not literal but are related to each other homologically, i.e. each 'repeated' statement is another transformation of the original shape. Musical material in each section thus undergoes a gradual process of metamorphosis. These musical ideas, or shapes, are not always clearly perceivable at the beginning of each segment but become gradually more recognisable as the music unfolds, until they crystallise into clearly defined structures. This is particularly relevant to the long slow segment of the work that follows very fast central section.
